Pet Profiles: Take Guesswork Out of Shopping for Your Pet

I remember the first dog I got on my own. Her name was Libby.

She was a chocolate lab. I was much younger then (this was in 2004), my husband was out of town and I thought it would be a good idea to get one while he was unable to say yes or no. (In my defense, he was on a climbing expedition for two weeks. I had no way to contact him and I was lonely!) I picked her up from the breeder, and then I went straight to the pet store to get some supplies.

Walking up and down the aisles, I found myself wondering what in the world I was doing. There were rows and rows of foods, treats, leashes, collars, toys– how was I to know what was the best fit for her? I had never owned a dog before! How could I decide? Was I confident that the person that works there knew what was best? No. The answer was no– I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t know what was best. What’s more, I was not confident in the slightest that the associate helping me knew either. So I had no choice– trial and error it was!

She was such a love.

We are grateful for every day we had with her. I’ve said before I wish I knew better then. I would have done better!

Pet Profiles

When I heard about this “pet profile” process, I thought it was genius! It was especially genius for beginner pet owners like I was. I would have loved to have someone who knew what they were doing to help me through that first experience, and continue to help me as she grew, as her circumstances changed, and as health issues popped up.

A pet profile is developed by veterinarians and animal science nutritionists. You provide basic information about your pets (age, weight, energy level, breed, issues you’ve experienced or would like to avoid, known allergies, etc.). This pet profile will then recommend a full nutrition plan that’s unique to your pet. It even gives you feeding guidelines so you know exactly how much you should feed. It’s brilliant! As your pet changes, you can update the profile and get new recommendations.
