Self Coaching Tricks to Change Your Mood

Have you been in a situation where you’re filled with dread?

Maybe it’s a presentation you’re asked to give. Perhaps a training you’re in charge of. Or do you have a big pitch or proposal you’re giving? What are the moments leading up to the pitch like?

Let me guess, you’ve lost sleep, you’ve felt the butterflies, maybe even lost your appetite. And as a result, you get irritable? Short-tempered? Felt panic or pain in your chest?

Although it doesn’t happen too often, it does happen to me every once in a while. And when it does, I’ve found a few things to help calm the mind.

1. Listen to your favorite, pump-you-up music

Just before a big event I hosted, I was feeling worried and nervous about how the evening would go. I was lacking energy and sleep. I then decided to clear my head by listening to some music during the 20-minute drive to the event. The music helped relax me, brought about positive energy, and got me ready for the night ahead.

2. Always practice gratitude

Gratefulness has been my answer to my most hard situations. In fact, when I focus on what’s good in my life, my mood shifts and the positive energy comes flowing back! I can promise you that the positive vibes you’ll feel will always outweigh the nerves. One way is to come up with at least three things you’re thankful for. Move beyond three, keep the dialogue flowing with gratitude until your mind is calm and at ease.

3. Acknowledge you are doing the best you can

Can you say that out loud to yourself? That you are doing the best you can?

If you feel that is authentic, allow yourself to feel calm, take deep breaths, and most importantly, recognize that you are doing the best you can. If you can’t authentically say that, what then can you do that you have control of that would allow that statement to be true?
